There are a number of factors to think over before selecting an outdoor fountain for your garden. The fountain should accent your garden and not overpower the area. The scale or size of the fountain should be on the same scale as the house or garden where the fountain is going to reside. When you look at your garden you do not want to see just the fountain. You want your eyes to be drawn to the garden as whole, sort of like a beautiful picture that you look at from the rest of the world.
A small area of course calls for a small size fountain or water feature. You would not want to place an estate size fountain in a small garden or in the yard of a cottage as you would lose the beautiful home and landscape and only see the fountain. A large garden or estate can accomodate a large fountain. A large garden could also be split by beautiful plants, fences and shrubs to create smaller gardens with several small fountains.
You want to frame the view of the fountain with plants and shurbs that will draw your eye to the fountain. Think of having many plantings of the same plant or shrub on each side of the focal point that will draw your eye to the piece. This will give your garden a harmonious and peaceful feel.
Fountains are normally used as the focal point of a garden or lawn as they are beautiful and peaceful. A focal point is usually the center of the area you wish to accent. You need to measure the area and visualize what the fountain will look like from all sides. Try to plan the area around the fountain so that it all comes together when complete. You want to choose plants and accent pieces around the fountain that will make the area look as each part belongs with the other.
Plan your garden or lawn so that it has symmetry. Imagine if you draw a line straight down the center of your garden or the area where you plan to place your fountain. Your fountain should be in the center. Each side of the center line should be the same size and shape and should mirror the other. Maybe you should plan what plants you are going to place on each side or maybe a bench on both sides. It is best to plan the garden before you purchase the fountain to have a theme that will work in the area that you have to work with.
