Buddha - Meaning The Enlightened One
Buddha was born in Lumbini in India with the historical name of Siddhattha Gotama in the sixth century BC. He was born into a wealthy family his father being a tribal leader who married a princess who became his mother. Buddha lived a life of privelege up until the age of 29.
During his journeys outside the palace walls he experienced four encounters which lead to the four truths. He came into contact with an old man, a sick man and dead man or a corpse. His encounters gave light to suffering in the world and that he to was subject to becoming old, sick and eventually would die. The fourth encounter was with a holy man which gave light to hope in suffering.
The Buddha's enlightenment showed him the beings were reborn many times and were reborn according to the deeds of their previous life good or bad. He saw the nature of suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering and the way leading to the cessation of suffering which are the four noble truths.
Buddha lived the remainder of his life as a homeless person and traveled from village to village offering his teachings of enlightenment. He believed in simplicity in life and goodness.
