Over time algae growth will occur due to the water and light combination associated with outdoor or indoor fountain use. You will also experience some mineral deposit buildup due to minerals found in the water. Algae growth and mineral buildup will occur in all fountains including concrete, cast stone, resin, brass or copper. Fountain manufacturers recommend that the fountain be completely drained and cleaned every four to six months to mantain the beauty and functionality of the fountain. The fountain may be drained by using the drain plug located in the bowls of most larger fountains. If the fountain you are attempting to drain does not have a drain plug you may use the pump that came with the fountain to pump the water out of the fountain bowls. To remove the water from smaller fountains just simply disassemble the fountain one piece as at time to remove the water and clean each piece. Once your fountain is clean use an ordinary garden hose to fill the bowls to the recommended water level. We do recommend that you use a water clarifier to help slow the growth of algae and keep mineral deposit build up to a minimum between cleaning and maintenance. The finish will age over time however sealer will add a protective layer to delay the process.
