Natural concrete fountains age and weather with time and little or nothing needs to be done to preserve the concrete. Many owners find the natural aging and weathering of a natural stone lawn and garden fountain very appealing. If you wish to slow the natural aging and weathering process you may apply a clear concrete sealer that you will find at any hardware store in your area.
Finished concrete fountains are finished with a sealer type outdoor finish to repel the effects of aging and weathering. This finish will fade over time due to the effects of sun and water. After a number of years have passed you may wish to refinish your fountain. We recommend a high quality outdoor latex paint for your outdoor lawn and garden fountain. You will need to apply several coats to completely seal the fountain and maintain a lasting finish.
White residue may form on the bowl or shell of your fountain. This is due to evaporation and mineral buildup. Frequent rinsing with fresh water will help to reduce the mineral build up on your fountain. When the buildup becomes severe and unsightly it may be removed with a
fountain cleaner and lime remover which is available through our website.
Concrete Fountain, Lawn Ornaments and Statue Repair
Cracks or broken pieces do sometimes occur with concrete fountains, lawn ornaments and statues. The cracks or breaks may be repaired with Quick Patch Epoxy or 15 minute epoxy available at hardware stores. Follow the instructions on the package. The surface must be clean
and dry before applying the product. Let the product dry and cure for 24 hours after application to your fountain, statue or lawn ornaments.
Fountain Pump Maintenance
Check your water level daily and apply water as needed to assure that the fountain pump is able to work efficiently. Depending on where the fountain is located and the amount of lime and minerals in your water your pump should
be cleaned twice per month or monthly.
To clean your fountain pump use two cups of white household vinegar diluted in one gallon of water. Soak the fountain pump in the solution for approximately 10
minutes then plug the fountain pump in and let it run while submersed in the solution for approximately 30 minutes. This will loosen the deposits that have formed on the fountain pump. Remember to remove any twigs, leaves or loose debris that have gathered on the screen.
Winter Maintenance of Concrete Fountains, Statues and Lawn Ornaments
Concrete fountains, statues and lawn ornaments need to be protected from severe winter weather as freezing could damage your fountain. If you live in an area that reaches temperatures below freezing if possible you should
store your fountain or lawn ornaments inside away from snowing and freezing. If this is not possible then you should drain your fountain or bird bath completely.
After the fountain or birdbath has been drained place burlap inside the bowl so no water can gather in the fountain bowl or shell. The expanding and contracting of freezing and melting ice, snow and water can damage your fountain. Cover the fountain with a waterproof cover so that no water can gather inside the bowls. Make sure if you are storing your fountain inside that if you stack the bowls you place a layer of burlap between the pieces so that no scratching will occur from the pieces rubbing together. If you follow the above steps this should protect your fountain for the winter months.
